The History of Suicide By Spoon.
Formation. (August 2008)
Suicide By Spoon was originally a 3 piece Pop-Punk band with a completely different line up,
formed in Vernon, BC. over summer vacation in 2008, as more of a hobby than a serious band. The idea came up in a conversation between Chris (bass) and Nicholas (guitar) over facebook. Shortly after they asked a friend if they would play drums for them and formed Suicide By Spoon. The band wrote some songs and played a few local shows at their school, gaining some popularity, they also signed up for the school's annual talent show, and won first place. But their drummer grew egotistical and skipped practice frequently, thinking he didn't need practice. This annoyed Chris and Nicholas, so they decided to kick him out of the band. As time progressed, Nicholas and Chris had gradually split ways as well, but on good terms. No particular events split up the band, but Nicholas grew more involved in other things, and Chris had decided to carry on making music by himself in a solo Project. |
Break up, therapy, and other projects. (January 2009)
To try and salvage the remains of Suicide By Spoon, Chris had started a solo project from it.
But not long after he started working on songs, his solo career came to an end. Late one night, while Chris, his girlfriend Angela, and some friends were driving home from a party, a drunk driver swerved into the wrong lane, hitting the vehicle completely off the road. The collision not only took the life of Chris' girlfriend, and close friend, Kenny, but also left Chris with a broken arm, a shattered rib cage, and various other injuries. Along with his physical injuries, Chris had to deal with the loss of two very important people in his life. He slowly crept into a state of depression, which in turn led to various drug addictions, and later he was found attempting suicide which led to immediate conviction to a mental recovery institution. (The song "Nothing Lasts Forever" is dedicated to Angela and Kenny, and tells the story of the crash.) Meanwhile in England, Martin and his brother Nick played in the band Lonely Hearts. Lonely Hearts was a 4 piece emo/alternative band had become locally popular and recorded an EP. Martin wrote most of their songs, but as time went on the bassist voiced his additions more and more. They played numerous shows and even started work on a full length LP in a professional studio. As the boys grew older, some of the members developed some bad habits and attitude problems. The drummer was an active drug user, and had a habit of stealing from the band, while the bassist ended up arguing with Martin a lot, and eventually got into a fist fight with him. Fortunately, Martin won the fist fight and came out nearly unscathed, But this was the last straw. By now both brothers were sick of the other two members and left the band. Shortly after they broke up, without their guitarists and main song writer, they couldn't finish the album. Adam on the other hand played drums in concert band class at a private school, in Kelowna, BC. His original instrument in band was Tenor Saxaphone, but his band teacher insisted he switch to drums after seeing how much better Adam was than their current drummer. Upon hearing this his parents bought him a drum kit, despite their stance against rock music. Since the switch, they made it to nationals four years in a row, and won twice, but he never had an out of school band. |
Reunion, Current Line up, Alleged EP. (December 2010)After nearly two years of extensive therapy, Chris returned to public school,
this same year Martin and Nick had moved back to Canada, and enrolled at Seaton Secondary. Adam had also been switched back to public school as he grew sick of the snobs at his previous school, and requested immediate transfer to the same high school as his three friends. The four friends hadn't seen each other since elementary school, as the brothers moved to England, and Adam was switched to a private school for four years due to his high grade average. Aside from the odd conversation over texts, they'd really seen nothing of each other in years. After a series of hang outs for the four friends to catch up with each other, Martin had brought up the idea of starting a band with the four of them. Chris and Martin had been childhood friends, they had played in a band together already, and now Martin taught Nick to play guitar over the years, whereas as Adam was a concert drummer. They all had band experience and between them had all the required instruments for a band. They had also all been screwed over, one way or another, now was their chance to make up for it. All four of the members unanimously agreed on the idea of starting a band. A few practices were held, and a few songs were written, the band was tight. A mix of darker influences and melancholic undertones from Chris on bass that leads, and supports, mixing with martin's melodic guitar work, and complimented by Nick's more aggressive style, all held together by Adam's pounding bass drums. Suicide By Spoon is one strange mix of music. All throughout Christmas Break the band wrote, practiced, and recorded songs. It is said they compiled the songs into an EP called "Lucid Simplicity," but this release is alleged. The band does not support the existence of this album, nor do they deny it, to this day, it's still a mystery if the album even exists or not. |

More Local Live Shows and Hiatus. (May 2011)Later, The Band started work on their second album, The members all writing new material,
recording, and playing lots of live shows. They also did lots of CD signings, and interviews. they mostly played old hits, but also played a few never before heard songs from their upcoming EP. The band also released a collaborated album titled "The unrecognized telling of an End" May 24th. It was a 13 track LP co-written, and composed by well the known musician, Spectre. The band was working on this in secret album shortly after "The Horror of Symmetry," and it took the both fanbases of Spectre, and Suicide by Spoon by total surprise. The album itself revolves around a theme of destruction, and the apocalypse. It received very good refute and was sold out within weeks. The band has also released a new single titled, "Just Let it Rain." on may, 26th, 2011. "Bittersweet" a backside track on the single features the guitar work of a rising star, known to the public as Zarpa_perras, who has been jamming with Chris and Martin frequently. (re-released on Cookies and Biscuit Records later in September) Unfortunately though, after a long day of playing Martin and Nick decided to go rent a few movies, but on their way back a drunk driver ran a red light and hit them, knocking the vehicle off the road, and into a ditch nearby, The accident put both Martin and Nick in the hospital, rendering them completely unable to play. Friends of the band Zarpa_Perras and Spectre filled in for the two brothers on guitar so the band could finish their scheduled shows. The loss of their guitarists was hard to cope with. All of the member's spirits broken, and only a drummer and a bassist in the band currently, Chris and adam decided to call it quits. So despite how little any of the members wanted it, the band broke up, With no more releases, they were dropped from Cookies & Biscuit Records temporarily. In June the 4 teens had graduated, Martin and Nick missed the last few weeks of school, and the ceremony, but by taking some online provincial exams, the brothers graduated just fine. |
Reformation and Completed EP. (august 2011)in August, a few months the accident, Martin and Nick's conditions had improved substantially,
enough for them to leave the hospital and go back home, not expecting this, the return of his two guitarists took Chris completely by surprise when the brothers arrived at his door. Immediately, they called Adam's cell and they had a practice Jam to see if they had lost it, They hadn't. The band started work on a few songs that Martin and Nick had written while they were in the hospital. The band then started work on an EP titled "Broken bonds and worn out songs." and started to play a few local live shows, Though not going on a full tour yet, waiting until the brothers were completely recovered and healthy again. August 15th, 2011 brought the release of the 6 track EP "Broken Bonds and Worn out Songs." the album had 113 pre-orders, and made numerous sales upon it's release, it seems the majority of their fans had stayed faithful, and still supported them. |
Talk of Sophomore LP and Style Change. (September 2011)In an interview with Rottin' Randy Suicide By Spoon released that they have commenced work
on a Second (and possibly final) LP. The album will be called "the Diaries of Dead Men." It is a collection of stories of the band members lives turned into songs. Similar to The Horror of Symmetry, only focusing on the entire band, rather than just Chris (bass). Some notable differences between this release and their others was the role of the guitar players, For one thing, Martin is no longer their lead guitarist as both guitarists offer leads and rhythms, Nick also writes a lot more than he used to, rather than play what martin wrote, giving a more aggressive tone to some of their songs, over Martin's more melodic tone. They've also stopped using traditional "mindless chugging" breakdowns, and become far more technical with their guitar playing than ever before. The band is definitely more experimental now, and going down the road of "post-Hardcore." |
Dead Men Don't Speak Tour. (November 2011-April 2012)Suicide by Spoon launched their biggest tour to date November 21st, 2011.
The band is currently taking part in the Dead Men Don't Speak Tour. This is the Band's first full US tour, dates from November through most of December, Starting on the west coast, ending in the east, the band will play nonstop until Christmas. Martin (guitar) also left this message on his tumblr for the band's fans: "We got a lot of fan mail lately, mostly for signing merch, personal questions, fan art, etc, but one of the most reoccurring questions is, 'Why don't you guys ever come see your fans here?' and the truth is, It's not that we've never wanted to tour outside of North America, we just never had the money to travel overseas, we only just got signed again. We've released all of our albums through our own sites and over facebook and what not, then labels have re-released them afterwards, we also give out quite a few free shirts and CDs. This sort of cuts a hole in our pocket, but we still feel bad about it. We've always wanted to play a show for each and every one of our fans. Which is why, after we finish the US tour, we're going to take a short break from touring til January, so that we can spend time with our families, and celebrate Christmas and New Years. But we're proud to announce that after New Years, we'll be going back on tour, because the US tour was only part one of a massive four part world tour! So Europe, Asia, and even Australia will finally see us! Dates will be released soon. And you thought we didn't care. ;) of course we do! and we're coming to a city near you!" The rest of the tour took place with the band hitting most of Canada in from January to February, then Asia from mid february til the end of march, and April was spent in Australia, and New Zealand. The band finished their tour on the 19th of april, and set out for home on the 21st, and that was the conclusion of the band's first world tour. |
Final Live Show and Break up. (May 2012)The band announced that a secret show would take place on the 8th of May, in Vernon, BC.
via each of the members tumblr pages, their facebooks, and other social network sites. It was also allegedly announced it would be their final show. The band played every song off of "The Horror of Symmetry," and most of the songs featured on their new album, "The Diaries of Dead Men" as well. Shortly after, the fans had grown restless unsure if this was the end of Suicide by Spoon, or if it was merely the end to a tour, album promotion, or just a temporary hiatus. In response to hundreds of emails and thousands of questions, the band had this to say: "Hey guys, there's been a lot of questions coming in about the band, and we're gonna try and answer as many of them as we can in one big blog post. For starters, unfortunately, yes, the rumors are true. Suicide by Spoon is breaking up. There are a lot of reasons for this, but we're going to tell you it has nothing to do with: A) Arguments or disputes. We still love each other, and are the best of friends, no worries. B) Musical differences. Again, we still get along and can work together fine. C) Touring. Despite any and all hardships, going on tour was fun, and we loved meeting you all. To be completely truthful, none of the reasons really have to do with the band at all. Unfortunately, we rather not disclose them with the public as it's somewhat personal, and we hope you can all understand, as well as forgive us for possibly letting you down. Suicide by Spoon will always love it's fans, and we will always appreciate what you did for us. Without you, none of this would have been possible. So as a thank you, We're gonna upload a bunch of download links to some "secret songs" for free on our blogs. Hopefully you guys enjoy them. :) As for the other frequently asked questions: FAQ #1: Will we be hearing from you guys again? Answer: We'd like to say yes, but unfortunately, probably not. FAQ #2: Is this a joke? please let this be a joke, or a prank of some sort. Answer: No, it's completely true. FAQ #3: Will any of you be in any other projects? If so, which ones? Answer: At the moment, none of us are up to anything. We'll keep you updated. FAQ #4: What about Diaries of Dead Men? Why isn't it out yet? Will it be out? Answer: Yes, it's currently being mixed and edited, all the recording is done. FAQ #5: You guys are gonna make a "Best of" Album, right? Answer: Probably not, but we're considering it due to all the requests for one. FAQ #6: Can we still mail you CDs and merch to sign? or can we not contact you anymore? Answer: Of course! Suicide by Spoon will always love their fans, feel free to email us, or send us merchandise to sign, or even just to see what's up with us. Well, that's about it. Hopefully that answers your questions, and doesn't make to many more. It's been fun guys, thanks so much for the love, dedication, and all of your support. Thank you to 1st Assault, Spanky Revolution, Spectre, Zarpa_perras, Chester, Burger, and all of our other friends, and our fans whom we love, and will never forget. -Sincerely, Chris, Martin, Nick, and Adam of Suicide by Spoon." |
